Dr Utomo Josodirdjo received the award on behalf of Dr Washington Z. Sycip
Founder The SGV Group & Asian Institute of Management Philippines
Lifetime Achievement
2013

The ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award recognizes Dr Washington Z. SyCip for his lifelong service in promoting the cause of learning.

Dr SyCip is an internationally acclaimed accountant and founder of the Asian Institute of Management and SyCip Gorres Velayo and Company (SGV). He holds BS and MS degrees from the University of Santo Tomas (UST). He also obtained a Master of Science in Commerce from Columbia Business School. In 1984, he was conferred with Doctor of Accounting Education from UST.

A product of the Philippine public school system, Dr SyCip was in the United States completing a post-graduate degree during the outbreak of the Second World War. His father (the “Dean of Philippine Banking” and one of the first ethnic Chinese to be admitted to the Philippine Bar) was in Manila at the time of the Japanese invasion and was detained. After hearing reports that his father had been executed by the Japanese, Dr SyCip enlisted in the war effort. He was recruited into a special code-breaking unit and was later deployed to India as a code-breaker.

After the war, Dr SyCip started his own accountancy practice. He eventually partnered with Alfredo Velayo and Ramon Gorres to form what is now known as SGV, one of the Philippines’ and Asia’s largest and most prestigious accounting and consulting firms.

A staunch believer in Asian talent, Dr SyCip has received numerous accolades in the fields of accountancy and consultancy in recognition of his significant contributions to human capital and business development.
