The “Contribution to Society” award recognises Professor (Col.) A. Balasubramanian for revolutionising management education in India.

Professor (Col.) A. Balasubramanian, or Dr Bala as he is popularly known, is one of the founding fathers of management education in India. An eclectic man, Dr Bala is known for many unique and bold initiatives in management education in the country. As its Director, he was instrumental setting up the hugely popular Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies (SIMS), one of the top business schools of India.

A daring, unconventional and creative educationist, Dr Bala was the first to conceive the idea of launching a management institute exclusively for armed forces personnel and their dependents. Dr Bala is the President of Sri Balaji Society which runs a network of premier educational institutes including the flagship Balaji Institute of Modern Management (BIMM), an institute of quality management education that is today rated as one of the top 30 B – schools in the country.

An army veteran-turned-education crusader, Dr Bala shot to national fame in 1997, when he became the first and the only subedar (soldier) in the army to be directly promoted to the honorary rank of a full colonel: a honour bestowed upon him by the then President of India, K.R. Narayanan, in recognition of his invaluable contributions to the field of education.

The Asia HRD Awards Committee is honoured to bestow upon Professor (Col.) A. Balasubramanian the “Contribution to Society Award 2017” for his work on developing management education models accessible to the masses.
