Maldives, a tropical nation in the Indian Ocean is composed of 26 ring-shaped atolls, which are made up of more than 1000 coral islands.  Maldives is the lowest lying country and is not built on sand but on the planet’s most endangered eco system, coral reefs.  Despite doubts about whether Maldives will keep its head above water, Maldives has set about a plan to protect natural coral and sea life assets.  Additionally, Maldives has developed a bustling tourism industry to make the nation economically sustainable.  A total of 1.2 million tourists visited Maldives.

The Asia HRD Awards Committee is honoured to bestow upon His Excellency Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom and the Republic of Maldives, the “Lifetime Achievement Award 2017” for their resilience.
